Tangkuban Perahu is an adaptation of the Mountain
Tangkuban Perahu folklore. The mountain is geographically located in
Bandung, West Java, Indonesia.
In this story, three Stars of Destiny is introduced.
Chikei Star 地刑 = Sangkuriang
Chisou Star 地壯 = Tumang
Chiketsu Star 地傑 = Paul
This
project explores the symbolism of beliefs, in particular the
relationship of mountains and triangles as well as Chritianity and the
cross. Referencing closely to the relationship between Dayang Sumbi (a
woman) and Tumang (a dog) from the original folklore, this project also
aims to explore anthropomorphic animal and human relationships, commonly
found in bara genre of Japanese adult comics.
Apart from the folklore, this series of work also pay close reference to X 1999, an apocalyptic manga by a Japanese collective, Clamp.
